DT38 Newsletter – “Channel38” – September 2023

Welcome to the DT38 September 2023 newsletter, Channel38.

It’s been another busy month for us at DT38 and we’re delighted to share some of the very latest developments, events and stories involving our charity.

It’s also a chance for us to pass on vital information about the work we do to raise awareness of testicular cancer around schools and in communities as well as publicly showing gratitude for the many people who support us in our work.

Men and boys: Remember to check yourselves on the first of every month, it could save your life!

Dylan’s West Ham United FC Debut – 11 Years

Dylan Tombides Making His West Ham United FC First Team Debut in 2012

The eleventh anniversary of our beloved Dylan Tombides’ first team debut for West Ham United FC was marked on September 25th.

Getting the go ahead to warm up by DT38 Ambassador Sam Allardyce – Hammers boss at that time – remains a treasured memory for the Tombides family and all involved with DT38.

The League Cup match versus Wigan Athletic FC (then a Premier League club) in 2012 came more than a year after Dylan had been diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Despite dealing with the trauma and treatment of such a devastating disease Dylan was determined to play football come what may.

Purely because of his determination and love of the game he continued to train and maintain his fitness which allowed “Big Sam” to give Dylan his first appearance in the tie against The Latics at Upton Park.

The result may have been a 1-4 defeat for the boys in claret and blue, but the moment meant much more than that to so many.

Dylan tragically lost his battle with testicular cancer on April 18th, 2014, but making his debut for the club which he had grown to love – whilst fighting cancer – is an inspirational achievement that will live forever.

“Paolo Di Canio, Paolo Di Canio”

DT38 was delighted to have been an official supporter An Evening with Paolo Di Canio this month.

In a rare treat for fans, the Hammers legend took to the stage at the Brentwood Centre in Essex on September 15th to share a collection of wonderful stories about this time in claret and blue.

The evening was hosted by DT38 Ambassador Tony Cottee.

And our Co-Founder Tracy Tombides was also invited to take the podium alongside organiser Ian Morgan of E13 Events.

Tracy took the microphone to recount the story of her son Dylan and to pass on information about the importance of checking your testicles on the first day of every month.

You can watch Tracy’s big moment here:

In the past three years E13 Events have helped raise £55,000 for DT38 from three Golf Days and events like this.

Huge thanks to Ian for the opportunity and for your continued support of DT38.

It was a fantastic night!

Hammers / Perth Tour Match Shirts Raised $9,000 AUD for DT38

Thanks to our friends at West Ham United FC and their shirt sponsor Betway, we were able to auction the match-issued shirts from the club’s tour of Perth in July and we raised $9,000.

This is an awesome (and important) amount of money which we’ll be using to support our work raising awareness of testicular cancer.

Carlton & Kevin Urge Men & Boys to Regularly Check!

DT38 Ambassador Carlton Cole and West Ham United First Team Coach Kevin Nolan joined our Check 1-Two Campaign this month.

We were delighted the famous pair chose Dylan’s memorial statue in Perth as the backdrop for a special video to encourage men and boys to check their tackle on the first day of every month.

This wonderful clip is the latest episode of our Check 1-Two campaign, which urges males to check their testicles.

The film was shared on September 1st and every month on the first day we send out a message from a supporter or celebrity to help spread this vital information.

Did you know? Self-checking is simple, you can do it in bed, in the shower, on the couch or anywhere private, and it could save your life!

Early detection is so important when it comes to health issues such as testicular cancer and that’s why we’ll keep reminding you to get checking!

Big thanks to Carlton and Kevin and to all of the many great folks who’ve joined in our Check 1-Two campaign so far. Keep an eye out for who’s going to make an appearance on October 1st.
