DT38 Newsletter “Channel38” – May 2023

Welcome to the DT38 May 2023 newsletter, Channel38.

It’s been another busy month for DT38 and we’re here to share some of the very latest news, events and stories involving our charity.

It’s also an opportunity for us to pass on vital information about the work we do raising awareness of testicular cancer across the world, around schools and in communities as well as publicly showing gratitude for the many people who support us in our work.

Men and boys: Remember to check yourselves on the first of every month, it could save your life!

Glorious Night at the Perth Glory MGP Awards

We were honoured to pop on our gladrags for one of Perth’s events of the year, the glitzy Perth Glory FC MGP Awards 2023.

Father of Dylan Tombides, Jim Tombides joined our Head of Media & Operations down under Donna Giuffre to represent our charity at the star studded bash at Novotel Perth on May 20th.

We were absolutely thrilled to present the DT38 U23 Player of the Year Award to Glory midfielder Keegan Jelacic.

Huge congrats to Keegan and to all winners on what was a wonderful evening celebrating with Glory players and officials.

We’d also like to offer huge thanks to Perth Glory FC owner Tony Sage for his amazing support for DT38 across the season.

We’re so incredibly proud to partner with your Club.

One Glory!

Special Day at Perth Glory FC v Western United Raising Awareness of DT38

Huge thanks to everyone at our partner club Perth Glory FC and to Western United FC for your support at the DT38 Matchday on April 29th.

The A-League men’s fixture was dedicated to raising awareness for DT38 and a beautiful round of applause for Dylan on minute 38 was incredibly poignant.

We were once again thrilled to invite so many youngsters as DT38 mascots who had a ball with Glory mascot George The Gorilla and enjoyed access to the pitch!

We also took part in the coin toss.

Sadly the match ended 1-2 to United but the opportunity to raise so much awareness for DT38 and testicular cancer on the day was incredible.

Huge thanks again to Glory and to everyone who helped make the day such a success including Donna, Ash, Erica, Neil, Rosie, Claire, Miri and Stefan.

Perth SC v Stirling Macedonia FC – “The Dylan Derby”

The “Dylan Derby” proved another hugely successful day for DT38 at Dorrien Gardens this month.

Perth SC v Stirling Macedonia FC is dedicated each season to Dylan Tombides, who played for both clubs as a youngster.

The stadium was awash with bright orange with both the team captains and ball kids donning our special DT38 awareness t-shirts for the NPL WA fixture on May 6th.

Perth SC president Jason Marocchi and Luke Pavlos were joined by Jim Tombides, for the big event which also featured a 38th minute applause in memory of Dylan.

And our Head of Media & Operations down under, Donna Giuffre, gave a talk at the pre game lunch ahead of Jim presiding over the coin toss.

The match ended 4-0 to Stirling Macedonia FC.

Big thanks to everyone who made this a very special fixture for DT38, once again!

West Ham United Make European Final

We are so excited to have seen West Ham United overcome AZ Alkmaar to make the Europe Conference League Final.

The Hammers will now play Fiorentina in the final in Prague on June 7th.

Congratulations to everyone at the club on getting to a European final for the first time in 43 years*

*Not counting the Intertoto Cup

Sending all the luck in the world to the Hammers for the big one, we’re with you all the way!

New DT38 Ambassador

Robert Byrne once met Dylan Tombides at Upton Park in 2012 and the late Aussie striker made such an impression on him that he now wants to help out DT38.

The Hammers fan is the latest person to join our team of DT38 Ambassadors alongside Declan Rice, Mark Noble, Tony Cottee, Carlton Cole and many other Irons icons.

Robert, who hails from Australia, will now support DT38 by helping us raise awareness of testicular cancer.

Great to have you onboard!

Kieran Bywater Makes Appeal for Males to Check Themselves Once a Month

We were so pleased that Dylan and Taylor’s former team mate and DT38 Ambassador Kieran Bywater chose to join our campaign to raise awareness about the importance of self checking once a month.

The midfielder – who is now retired from football – helped us by making a video in May to encourage men and boys to check their testicles on the first day of every month.

The video was the latest installment of DT38’s Check 1-Two Campaign, which launched in 2020.

Kieran enjoyed an Academy career at West Ham United with Dylan before stints at various clubs in the USA.

He realises the importance of self checking because early detection of any symptoms of testicular cancer can dramatically increase your chances of surviving the disease.

Did you know? Self-checking is simple, you can do it in bed, in the shower, on the couch or anywhere private, and it could save your life!

Kieran is the latest in a very large group of great people – including many famous faces – who have chosen to back our campaign.

Keep an eye out for who’s going to make an appearance on June 1st.

Picture of the Month

Please keep sharing those great pictures, the amazing snaps you share with your DT38 gear, we just love it!

And every month we have the difficult job of selecting a “Picture of the Month”, just for fun!

Earlier this month we were so proud of one of our own, Ben Meredith, who ran the Vancouver Marathon no less to raise funds for DT38

Ben is a DT38 Ambassador and has long supported our work as he is a close family friend of the Tombides family.

Here he is pictured with Makena Jones – who also gave her all for our charity – shortly after crossing the finish line.

Ben and Makena, what a fantastic achievement. We are in awe!

Sharing the Love

We are so grateful to more than 35,000 people who follow and support us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Every month we receive so many shares, Retweets, likes and tags and we’re so grateful for each and every one of them, thank you.

And that brings to end this edition but we’ll be back with the next edition of Channel38 in June.

If you have helped DT38 in some way in recent times, please be sure to let us know so we can include it in one of our future newsletters. Contact dt38@dt38.co.uk or connect with us on Twitter Facebook Instagram YouTube and TikTok.
