DT38 Official Newsletter – Channel38 – August Edition

A very warm welcome to the latest issue of Channel38, our August edition.

This is where we share all the very latest developments, events and support stories at DT38.

It’s also a chance for us to share important information about the work we do to raise awareness of testicular cancer around schools and in communities as well as publicly offering our thanks to the many people who support us in our endeavours.

Free Scans Down Under a Huge Success

Close to fully booked, we were delighted to meet so many men and boys at our latest free testicular cancer screenings day on August 24.

The event took place at Ultrasound Services Applecross, WA and we are extremely thankful for their hospitality, co-operation and expertise once again.

Raising awareness to the risks of the disease and information about self checking are very important areas of work for DT38 but we are also committed to providing free scan sessions as often as we can so that males can book in, get checked and leave with peace of mind.

On the day we also gave away 38 footballs – courtesy of Nike Football and DT38 Ambassador Damian Everetts as a competition to encouragement scan participation amongst local football teams.

Huge thanks to Football West for your support with this event.

FFA & PFA Award for Dylan

A new award has been created in Dylan Tombides’ memory

We were all extremely proud to be informed that a new set of national football awards have be launched in memory of Dylan Tombides.

Football Federation Australia and Professional Footballers Australia have created the ‘Dylan Tombides Australian Youth Player of the Year’ medal, which will be awarded annually to the best player from the Joeys (U/17s), Young Socceroos (U/20s) and Olyroos (U/23s).

Mother of Dylan and founder of DT38 Tracy Tombides, is extremely excited and moved by the announcement.

She said: “To have Dylan recognised by Australian football for his devotion and talent in the sport he truly lived for is a great privilege. We are hugely thankful to the FFA and PFA for making this happen,” his mother Tracy said.

“Dylan lived for football displaying a professionalism and dedication that carried him through his toughest days. To represent his country at the highest level was his ultimate ambition.

“Having to make a choice to play for England or Australia early on in his career was one of the easiest decisions he every had to make. He loved pulling on that Australian shirt.”

The winners of the first medals are to be unveiled at the Alex Tobin Medal Night later this year.

Huge thanks to the FFA, PFA, Football West and DT38 Patron Daniel Garb for your efforts in making this happen.

Craig’s Three Peak Challenge

Our long-serving trustee Craig Hartwell is about to walk close to the distance of a marathon for DT38, but with a twist!

Signing up for the Three Yorkshire Peaks Challenge means he is hiking the daring distance up and down hills and mountains in the English northern county.

It will take place on September 7th.

Craig – who has been involved with DT38 since it launched in 2015 – has chosen this gruelling mission to raise funds for DT38 Foundation.

It will take around twelve hours to complete the 25-mile hilly hike and he is hoping to muster at least £500 for his efforts.

If you would like to show your support to Craig and DT38, you can sponsor him here https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/craig-hartwell?utm_medium=email&utm_source=ExactTarget&utm_campaign=20190821_114718

New DT38 Ambassadors

We were extremely proud to announce the appointment of two amazing new DT38 Ambassadors this month.

West Ham United legend Tony Cottee has given his backing to DT38 and has offered his support for our ongoing campaign to raise awareness of testicular cancer from now on.

The striker made 336 appearances for the Hammers during the 1980s and 1990s scoring 146 goals making him the club’s fifth highest goal scorer of all time.

He also enjoyed successful spells at Everton FC and Leicester City and won 7 England caps.

Scott Jamieson is the captain of Melbourne City in the A-League.

The defender has previously enjoyed spells at IFK Goteborg, Western Sydney Warriors, Perth Glory, Sydney FC, Adelaide United and Bolton Wanderers.

He has also won four caps for the Socceroos.

Great to have you both on board chaps, thank you for your support.

But this month we’ve bent the rules and selected two wonderful images, you will see why.

During a recent visit to the UK from down under, here are close family friends of the Tombides family and supporters of DT38 Michael De Lima and Matthew Brennan.

The guys paid a moving visit to Dylan’s memorial stone at Champions’ Place, London Stadium ahead of a Hammers match.
