Welcome to the DT38 September 2022 newsletter, Channel38.
It’s been another great month for DT38 and we’re excited to share some of the very latest news, events and stories involving our charity.
It’s also a chance for us to pass on vital information about the work we do raising awareness of testicular cancer across the world, around schools and in communities as well as publicly showing gratitude for the many people who support us in our work.
Men and boys: Remember to check yourselves on the first of every month, it could save your life!

Dylan’s West Ham United FC Debut – 10 Years
September 25th marked the tenth anniversary of our beloved Dylan Tombides making a treasured first team debut for West Ham United FC.
Getting the nod to warm up from the bench by then Hammers manager Sam Allardyce – a DT38 Ambassador – remains a cherished memory for the Tombides family and everyone at DT38.
The League Cup tie in 2012 came more than a year after Dylan had been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Despite dealing with the trauma and treatment of such a devastating disease Dylan was determined to play football come what may.
He continued to train and maintain his fitness which allowed “Big Sam” to give Dylan his first appearance in the match against Wigan Athletic FC.
The result may have been a 1-4 defeat for The Irons, but the moment was much bigger than that.
Dylan tragically lost his battle with testicular cancer on April 18th, 2014, but making his debut for the club which he had grown to love is an achievement that will live forever.

National Australia Meet 2022 Supporting DT38
Big thanks to everyone who supported the inaugural National Meet Australia on September 16th and 17th, which was partly in support of DT38.
The event was organised by Newcastle United FC fan groups based down under including NUFC Sydney, Aussie Mags,Toon Army Brisbane and Newcastle United Perth Based Supporters.
The weekend in Sydney included a bar-based social session, fun football tournament and viewing of Newcastle United FC v AFC Bournemouth.
Around $3,000 AUD was raised via ticket sales and a special raffle, which will be split equally between DT38 and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Once again, a massive thank you to one and all for choosing DT38 as a beneficiary of this brilliant event.
Noble Move Marks DT38 Ambassador’s Future
We’d like to send big congratulations to DT38 Ambassador Mark Noble who has been appointed Sporting Director at West Ham United FC.
“Nobes”, as he’s affectionately known at the Club, will take up his new duties from January 2023.
The legendary midfielder – who hung up his boots at the end of last season – knew Dylan personally and agreed to become an Ambassador of our charity back in 2015.
As Sporting Director Mark will “work closely in support of manager David Moyes, as well as working with the Board of Directors, providing input, advice, and assistance across all aspects of the football operation. This will include Academy development, player recruitment, and player and staff wellbeing – with a particular focus on ensuring players both progressing through the ranks and new to the Club are nurtured in the West Ham United football philosophy and values”.
Mark Phillips Ran Great North Run for DT38
Huge respect to West Ham United FC Under-18 coach Mark Phillips who took on the famous Great North Run for DT38 on September 11th.
The long-standing Hammers Academy coach completed the world’s best known half marathon and raised £460 for DT38.
All monies raised will be used to support our work raising awareness of testicular cancer to help save men and boy’s lives.
Awesome Mark!
Sir Trevor Brooking Urges Men & Boys to Check Themselves Regularly
When West Ham United FC legend Sir Trevor Brooking speaks, people listen.
This month we were honoured to be able to share a special video message that Sir Trevor filmed just for DT38 to encourage men and boys to check their testicles on the first day of every month.
Sir Trevor kindly made this important clip as the latest installment of our Check 1-Two campaign, which encourages males to check their testicles once a month.
The film was shared on September 1st and each month on the first day we send out a media message from a supporter or famous face to help spread this vital information.
Did you know? Self-checking is simple, you can do it in bed, in the shower, on the couch or anywhere private, and it could save your life!
Early detection is so important when it comes to health issues such as testicular cancer and that’s why we’ll keep reminding you to get checking!
Big thanks to Sir Trevor and to all of the many great folks who’ve joined in our Check 1-Two campaign so far. Keep an eye out for who’s going to make an appearance on October 1st.
