DT38 Newsletter – “Channel38” – February 2023 Edition

Welcome to the DT38 February 2023 newsletter, Channel38.

It’s been another busy month for DT38 and we’re here to share some of the very latest news, events and stories involving our charity.

It’s also an opportuniity for us to pass on vital information about the work we do raising awareness of testicular cancer across the world, around schools and in communities as well as publicly showing gratitude for the many people who support us in our work.

Men and boys: Remember to check yourselves on the first of every month, it could save your life!

Eight Great Years of DT38

The eighth anniversary of DT38 Foundation was marked on February 28th.

DT38 was founded in 2015 to raise awareness of testicular cancer in memory of talented footballer Dylan Tombides, the year after he passed away following an incredible battle with the disease.

We are very proud to have honoured Dylan’s legacy by making a significant impact during that time.

DT38 has reached hundreds of thousands of men and boys across the UK, Australia and further afield to share messages about the importance of testicular health, self checking and the risks posed by testicular cancer.

It is the most common form of cancer among males aged 15-35.

Nearly every day we have reached out to people across the globe to share vital information, we have visited schools and given presentations at work places.

On many occasions we have arranged free testicular cancer screening sessions in both the UK and down under, offering men and boys important health updates and/or peace of mind.

We are very pleased to have entered collaborations with like-minded organisations to pool resources and reach out to even more people than we would have done alone.

In 2020 we launched Check 1-Two, a fresh campaign to encourage people to get to know their testicles and check for any changes on the first day of every month.

This campaign has been supported by many high profile people from the world of football who have made video clips to promote the initiative.

Owing to the fantastically positive impact Dylan had in his life – which was cut tragically short with passing at the age of 20 – both on and off the soccer pitch, we have benefitted from a huge amount of support across the world of football.

From day one we have enjoyed the support of West Ham United and are a Principal Charity Partner of the Club.

We’re also very proud of the support we receive as a partner of Perth Glory FC and our collaborations with Football West, The Socceroos and Professional Footballers Australia.

We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from each of these organisations and from the many others with which we work.

We cannot name each and everyone here, but please know that we’re extremely grateful for everything that you do.

In addition to providing free ultrasound scans for testicular cancer to so many people over the past eight years, we have also been in direct contact with many men who have wanted to share their own testicular cancer stories with us.

Some of these men wanted to show their gratitude to DT38 because our awareness work through Dylan’s inspiring story meant they caught the disease early and were afforded effective treatment.

Others got in touch to thank us for shining a light on the risks of testicular cancer, having themselves fought the disease. They pledged to support DT38 going forward to generously play their part in helping others.

Of course there are many people who freely give their time and determination to support DT38, it is these people who have made our charity such a success.

Many of these are involved with our charity in an official capacity, as officers, committee members, trustees, patrons and ambassadors, others help us informally, on specific events or initiatives.

To everyone who has given such generous support to us, with their time, determination, contacts and resources, we want to say a huge thank you!

As we move into our 9th year everyone at DT38 is more committed than ever to raising awareness of testicular cancer by educating men, women and boys about the risks of the disease, how to catch it and what to do about it it.

Simply put, check yourselves once a month, know the symptoms you’re looking for and make sure you contact your GP and insist on an ultrasound scan if you notice anything down under which matches the recognised symptoms.

Thank you.

DT38 Ambassador Player Watch

We’re so proud to have so many wonderful professional footballers amongst our DT38 team

And it’s proving to be a sensational season for some of them.

Down Under we see Scott Jamieson’s Melbourne City FC leading the way in the A-League!

In the UK midfielder Josh Cullen is enjoying his first season at new club Burnley FC who are top of The Championship and are odds on to rise to the Premier League once again.

Also in that division defender Dan Potts has been helping Luton FC enjoy a cracking season as they continue to push for a place in the promotion playoffs.

Leyton Orient FC are running away with the League Two title and DT38 duo George Moncur and Kieran Sadlier are playing a big part in that.

Meanwhile in the National League AFC Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – are pushing for promotion to the EFL with Elliot Lee proudly wearing number 38 for the team in midfield!

Amazing stuff guys, what a season!

New DT38 Ambassadors

This month we offered a very warm welcome to four new fantastic DT38 Ambassadors.

Billericay Town FC kitman Terry Hayes joined our team and will help us raise awareness of testicular cancer at the non-league club and beyond.

We also appointed playwright and actor Paul Bridger as an Ambassador.

Paul is based in Kent and will help us spread the word across the county.

Freddie Cornwell also joined us as a DT38 Youth Ambassador and he’s already hit the ground running by educating people in his school about DT38 and the disease.

And Twitch streamer and gaming fanatic Ben Martin, a.k.a Rennie Flem, will raise awareness across his online platforms for DT38 and testicular cancer.

We’re delighted to welcome you all into the DT38 team!

Alan Curbishley Encourages Lads to Check Themselves Once a Month

Former West Ham United player and manager Alan Curbishley has stepped forward to help DT38 raise awareness about the importance of self checking once a month.

“Curbs”, as he’s affectionately known, took part in a new video to encourage men and boys to check their testicles on the first day of every month.

The short film was the latest installment of DT38’s Check 1-Two Campaign, which launched in 2020.

Self checking is so important because early detection of any symptoms of testicular cancer can dramatically increase your chances of surviving the disease.

Did you know? Self-checking is simple, you can do it in bed, in the shower, on the couch or anywhere private, and it could save your life!

Curbs is the latest in a large party of famous faces to support our campaign.

Keep an eye out for who’s going to make an appearance on March 1st.
