DT38 Newsletter “Channel38” – August 2022 Edition

Welcome to the DT38 August 2022 newsletter, Channel38.

It’s been another busy month for us at DT38 and we’re delighted to share some of the very latest developments, events and stories involving our charity.

It’s also a chance for us to pass on vital information about the work we do to raise awareness of testicular cancer around schools and in communities as well as publicly showing gratitude for the many people who support us in our work.

Men and boys: Remember to check yourselves on the first of every month, it could save your life!

DT38 UK Golf Day – A Great Success!

The second sell-out annual DT38 UK Golf Day was hailed a huge success earlier this month.

A host of Hammers heroes including Sir Trevor Brooking, Tony Cottee, Tony Gale, John Moncur, Geoff Pike, Stuart Slater, Alan Curbishley, Martin Allen and Matt Upson joined a very large group of Hammers fans for 18 holes at Langdon Hills Golf & Country Club on August 16th.

Although some rain came down on the popular Essex golf course, spirits were sky high as 26 four balls competed with camaraderie to raise funds for DT38.

Organised in partnership with Ian Morgan of E13 Events, the day is expected to raise in excess of £15,000 for DT38 to support our work raising awareness of testicular cancer in memory of West Ham United Academy icon Dylan Tombides.

Both of Dylan’s parents Tracy and Jim Tombides and his brother Taylor attended the event.

Following a dinner at the end of the day, Tony Gale took the microphone for an auction and raffle with lots including a special edition signed Mark Noble shirt.

Special guests joining for the dinner included James Collins, Mark Ward, Jimmy Walker and Kenny Brown Jr who shared fond memories of Dylan’s time at the West Ham United Academy.

Tracy Tombides said: “Despite a tiny touch of rain it was a brilliant day and I want to say a huge thanks to Ian at E13 Events, Terry Moncur and Langdon Hills Golf & Country Club, Sir Trevor Brooking, Tony Gale and all former West Ham United players and everyone who came along to support the event.

“We raised a significant sum of money, all of which will be used to help raise awareness of testicular cancer and potentially save men and boys lives.”

Elliot Lee Claims Number 38 Shirt at Wrexham AFC

With the football season having kicked off this month we were thrilled to see Elliot Lee has chosen the wear the number 38 shirt as a tribute to his good friend Dylan Tombides at his new club Wrexham AFC.

Elliot – the son of former England footballer Rob Lee – is a DT38 Ambassador and great supporter of our charity.

He joined the Welsh Club – owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – this summer having previously worn the number 38 shirt during his time with Blackpool FC.

Billy Fights for Oz at The Commonwealth Games

We were very proud to cheer on new DT38 Ambassador Billy Polkinghorn who represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in July and August.

Billy, a boxer in the light-welterweight division, won his first round bout by knock out but was sadly eliminated in the second round on a split points decision.

Nonetheless, we were immensely excited to see Perth boy Billy (who was born in Essex, UK), wearing the green and gold at one the world biggest multi-sport events.

And there’s no doubt his future is looking very bright!

Go Billy!

Gary Carson Urges Men & Boys to Regularly Check!

The name’s Carson, Gary Carson!

We were delighted to secure of services of “Secret Agent” – well, DT38 Ambassador Gary Carson in a dinner suit – who generously helped us encourage men and boys to check their tackle with a special video.

Gary made this wonderful clip as the latest episode of our Check 1-Two campaign, which urges males to check their testicles on the first day of every month.

The film was shared on August 1st and each month on the first day we distribute a media message from a supporter or famous face to help spread this vital information.

Did you know? Self-checking is simple, you can do it in bed, in the shower, on the couch or anywhere private, and it could save your life!

Early detection is so important when it comes to health issues such as testicular cancer and that’s why we’ll keep reminding you to get checking!

Big thanks to Kieran and to all of the many great folks who’ve joined in our Check 1-Two campaign so far. Keep an eye out for who’s going to make an appearance on September 1st.

We were very pleased to announce the appointment of Gabriel Mendizabal as an Ambassador of DT38 this month.

He was so taken by Dylan Tombides’ story and our charity’s work that he was keen to get involved and support us in any way he can.

We’re absolutely delighted to have you on board Gabriel!
