DT38 Newsletter ‘Channel38’ – August 2021

Welcome to the DT38 August 2021 newsletter, Channel38.

It’s been another busy month for us at DT38 and we’re delighted to share some of the very latest developments, events and stories involving our charity.

It’s also a chance for us to pass on vital information about the work we do to raise awareness of testicular cancer around schools and in communities as well as publicly showing gratitude for the many people who support us in our work.

Men and boys: Remember to check yourselves on the first of every month, it could save your life!

The Latest News & Stories – August 2021

DT38 Golf Day – What An Event!

The sun was shining (rare for this UK summer), the event was sold out and we had a brilliant first DT38 Golf Day on August 24th.

Huge thanks to Ian Morgan of E13 Events and Terry Moncur and the team at Langdon Hills Golf & Country Club for helping to organise such a successful occasion.

We were so excited and proud to be joined by so many West Ham United icons including Sir Trevor Brooking, Martin Allen, Jimmy Walker, Stuart Slater, Brian Dear, Tony Carr MBE, John Moncur, Mark Ward and Tony Gale who was MC for the evening dinner and auction.

All of these lovely people gave up their time for free in support of DT38 and most of them enjoyed a round of golf alongside two DT38 teams and folks from some great businesses who supported the event.

Bacon rolls set the guys up for 18 holes on Essex’s premier golf course, before dinner and an auction to raise funds for our mission to raise awareness of testicular cancer.

Speakers included Sir Trevor Brooking, who reviewed the Hammers’ great win against Leicester City the evening before and their chances for the season ahead.

DT38 Ambassador Tony Carr MBE gave a moving account of the times he spent with Dylan Tombides, recalling the young striker’s bravery and determination to train at West Ham despite battling testicular cancer at the time.

We are hugely grateful to everyone who supported this event, made generous auction bids and helped to make the DT38 Golf Day the success that it was.

We’ll be announcing the amount we managed to raise shortly, but one thing is for sure, it will definitely help us continue to do our work after what had been a tremendously difficult period for our charity because of Covid-19.

Thank you.

Free Testicular Cancer Scans Down Under

We’re very excited to reveal that we’re planning our next FREE testicular cancer scanning event down under.

DT38 is committed to raising awareness of the disease, educating young people about resilience and well-being and organising free scans has been a long term initiative of our charity in both the UK and Australia

We’ll be announcing full details across our social media channels soon.

Rest In Peace Sam

We were devastated to hear about the passing of Sam Peters, a father, husband, son and friend to many.

Sam was a great supporter of DT38 & a huge fan of Perth Glory FC our A-League partner club down under.

He was such a sweet, passionate & generous person and he will be sorely missed.

Our thoughts are with Sam’s friends & family at this terrible time

Our Sixth Season as Charity Partner of West Ham United

The new English Premier League season has now kicked off and it will be our sixth campaign as a Principal Charity Partner of West Ham United FC.

During this time we have benefited from great support at the Club and have been with them every step of the way through the highs and lows of each campaign.

We were delighted to be back at the London Stadium for the amazing 4-1 win over Leicester City FC on August 23rd and we’re looking forward to taking our seats for the rest of the season.

Best of luck to the Hammers for 2021/22 and the European tour!

Rhys Ryan Video

If you haven’t seen it already we urge you to check out this cracking video made by DT38 Ambassador and testicular survivor Rhys Ryan.

Rhys made this film in support of our Check 1-Two campaign which encourages men and boys to check themselves on the 1st day of every month.

Testicular cancer is a killer, but is usually treatable if caught early.

We Are West Ham Podcast & Betway Fundraiser

We’re delighted to have been informed this month that the We Are West Ham podcast has struck a deal with West Ham’s main sponsor Betway to support DT38 for a second season.

Every Premier League game the lads from the We Are West Ham podcast, Jamie Jones and Will Pugh make a bet and any winnings will be matched by Betway.

Last season the scheme raised more than £5,000 for DT38 and we’re extremely grateful.

Good luck chaps!

Jayden Fevrier Wins Dylan Tombides Award 2020/21

Massive congratulations to exciting West Ham United winger Jayden Fevrier who won the Dylan Tombides Awards for 2020/21 this month.

The 18-year-old joins the likes of Declan Rice, Josh Cullen and Reece Oxford who have collected the accolade which was created in the memory of Dylan Tombides to recognise the most promising Academy player.

In June, Jayden signed his first professional contract with the Club in what has been an extremely exciting year so far.

We’re excited to reveal that the third annual DT38 White Collar Boxing event “Awareness Below the Belt 3.0” will take place at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on November 14th, 2021.

We kicked off on August 3rd with the birthday for DT38 Patron Mile Jedinak who was 37, while on the 8th Perth Glory goalkeeper and DT38 Ambassador Liam Reddy turned 40!

Aussie favourite Stan Lazaridis celebrated this big day on August 16th and two days later Dylan Tombides’ best friend and Hull City midfielder George Moncur was 28. Both are DT38 Ambassadors.

On August 24th professional footballer, testicular cancer survivor and DT38 Ambassador Sam Bone was 23 and on the 28th cousin of Dylan Tombides and DT38 Committee Member Jason Bondi enjoyed his birthday.

Many Happy Returns one and all!

Picture of the Month

We get a large number of brilliant pictures from here, there and everywhere and we also get some real beauts from our own events.

This month our chosen “Picture of the Month” is this great shot of DT38 Co-Founder Tracy Tombides with West Ham legend Sir Trevor Brooking.

The pair were pictured together at the DT38 Golf Day which Sir Trevor freely gave his time to attend.

We raised a significant amount of money to help us raise awareness of testicular cancer and everyone had a blast!

Support DT38 at our Online Shop

Of course the Coronavirus has had a significant impact upon everyone.

A large part of DT38’s fundraising comes from events we run throughout the year, as well as from individuals, companies and organisations who undertake fundraising initiatives to support our campaign to raise awareness of testicular cancer.

But we, like many others, have sadly been affected by the postponement of cancellation of many events and fundraising opportunities across 2020 and until at least Summer 2021.

The funds we receive are vital to support our ongoing work to help save the lives of men and boys through education and self-checking campaigns.

If you would like to continue supporting DT38 we do still accept direct donations via our website, you can donate towards our 3.80 Funding Appeal or you could make a purchase through our online store here: https://dt38foundation.myshopify.com

Thank you so much for any support you can give.

Sharing the Love

We are so grateful to more than 35,000 people who follow and support us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Every month we receive so many shares, Retweets, likes and tags and we’re so grateful for each and every one of them, thank you.

And that brings to end this edition but we’ll be back with the next edition of Channel38 in September.

If you have helped DT38 in some way in recent times, please be sure to let us know so we can include it in one of our future newsletters. Contact tracylee@dt38.org or connect with us on Twitter Facebook or Instagram
